NEWS.

25 Jul 2023

We had a lovely time last Saturday at The Tickled Trout celebrating Loftyfest which was a fun day with good music and interest in many of our dogs.

We had Ralphy, Colin and Kevin from kennels plus Buddy from his foster home and later Slippers, Wilfred and Lionel leant their support. Plus Susie who has a home came along to help promote what great dogs greyhounds are! A grand total of £537.20 was raised for us from the event so thank you all who came and donated.

It is always good to get the dogs out to see how they get on in these sort of situations.

OUR STORY.

Kent Greyhound Rescue is a registered charity (1138841) based near Hythe in South East Kent. Everyone at KGR is a volunteer and no one is paid. Our rescues find new homes for around 150 abandoned and unwanted greyhounds, lurchers and other sighthounds each year. We rehome throughout Kent and also in other counties (strict checks are carried out before any dog is rehomed, regardless of the location).

KGR receives no help or funding from the racing industry. So, our volunteers have the responsibility of fundraising every penny needed, to ensure the charity can meet it’s financial obligations.

The vast majority of our dogs arrive needing to be neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Most dogs also require a dental and/or other medical treatment, as well as the usual worm and flea treatments. Some dogs need more help than others, but the average cost of rescuing each dog is £600. We have to raise the funds to pay the difference between the donation and the actual cost of caring for the dog until a home is found.

Adopting a dog from Kent Greyhound Rescue
We ask for a minimum donation of £250 when you adopt a dog. This donation goes towards the general running costs of the charity. We explain why we ask for a donation in more detail in our FAQs. In return you are getting a dog that is:

- neutered/spayed
- fully vaccinated
- deflead and dewormed
- examined by a vet and provided the relevant medical treatment if required
- house-trained (if a dog comes from a foster home)
- usually has a pet passport

Please note that we do not operate a rescue center, which is open to the public. Instead the dogs wait for their new homes at either private boarding kennels or, ideally, in foster homes throughout Kent.

You will see us out out nearly every weekend throughout the year fundraising. Volunteers do not get paid by KGR, they give their time and efforts because they love the dogs.

We are all passionate about animal welfare and want to find the KGR dogs new homes. The majority work full time and manage the charity and the fundraising in their free time.

We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers, fosterers and financial supporters, because without them Kent Greyhound Rescue would not exist.
